ToyCAD or Tinkercad? Choosing the Right 3D Design App for Kids

If you’re looking for an easy 3D design app for your child—or for yourself—you might be wondering how ToyCAD compares with Tinkercad.

Both make 3D design accessible to beginners, but they introduce it differently. Tinkercad’s familiar workflow starts with assembling 3D shapes. ToyCAD lets you start with something even simpler: a scribble.

Draw with a brush, and ToyCAD automatically turns your marks into a smooth 3D shape. You can begin without knowing how to model an object or even having a finished design in mind.

Two views, one immediate connection

ToyCAD divides the design screen into two halves: a 2D view where you draw and a 3D view where you see the resulting object.

A child can simply start scribbling in the 2D view, much as they would with a brush in a painting app. The color palette is visible, so they can pick another color and keep drawing.

As they draw, ToyCAD automatically gives their brush strokes depth proportional to their width or thickness, creating smooth, rounded 3D forms. They don’t need to manually set a depth for that first scribble or learn an extrusion command.

The two views make the connection visible: this is the mark I drew, and this is what it looks like in 3D.

The first “aha!” moment

That first scribble becoming a 3D object is a special moment for many kids.

Several parents have told us that their children’s eyes light up when they see it happen. A few simple marks suddenly become something with volume — something they can imagine holding, and eventually turn into a real 3D print.

How is this different from Tinkercad?

In Tinkercad, a typical project begins with shapes such as boxes, cylinders, and spheres. You resize, position, and combine them, or use shapes to cut holes in other shapes. That approach works well when you can picture your idea as a collection of geometric pieces. A house might begin with a box and a roof; a vehicle might begin with a body and cylindrical wheels.

Now imagine a child wants to create a squiggly creature with a rounded body and unusual ears. Building it from basic shapes means figuring out which pieces to use and how to arrange them. In ToyCAD, the child can begin by drawing those forms with a brush and seeing them become smooth 3D shapes automatically.

For colorful characters and organic forms — curves and irregular shapes like those found in living things — this can offer a more direct path from an idea to a design.

Tinkercad also includes a Scribble tool for freehand shapes. ToyCAD’s distinguishing experience is the combination of brush-like drawing, automatic rounded volume, and a split screen that lets beginners see the relationship between their drawing and the 3D result.

ToyCAD supports geometric modeling, too

Starting with a scribble is only the beginning of what ToyCAD can do.

ToyCAD also supports geometric forms such as rectangles, triangles, cylinders, and spheres. Users can combine shapes or cut one shape from another using boolean operations, giving them access to a shape-based approach as their ideas call for it.

A project might start with a freehand creature and later use geometric shapes for a base or other details. Kids can explore both approaches within the same app.

The difference is the order of discovery: ToyCAD makes a brush stroke the easy first step, with more design tools available as the maker becomes curious about them.

Cost and getting started

Tinkercad is free, but users need an account to create and save their designs. ToyCAD is a paid product, but you can download and try it without creating an account.

ToyCAD’s free trial lets you explore the drawing and 3D design experience before deciding whether it is right for you. Saving projects and downloading models require a paid plan.

Learn to make toys while you create

Once a child is ready for a more guided project, ToyCAD includes built-in, step-by-step video tutorials.

During a tutorial, the video appears on the right side of the screen while the child draws on the left. They can watch a step, follow along, and continue building inside the app, without switching between a separate video window and their project.

It gives kids a path from that first spontaneous scribble to more involved designs, with a toy to work toward at each stage.

Which app is a good starting point?

The best starting point depends on what a maker enjoys and how they like to create.

A child who loves building with blocks may enjoy Tinkercad’s approach. A younger maker who loves drawing may find ToyCAD’s first steps especially familiar. Parents and hobbyists can enjoy the same freedom to experiment, and some makers will find a place for both apps.
